JEM Tech Group is Joining the Energy Movement!

JEM is helping customers with products and services to transform their data centers and office areas into energy efficient places.

Ideas to "Green" the Data Center

  1. Evaluate your energy efficiency and measure your energy consumption in the data center: Companies need to start with a baseline by figuring out what the company is paying per kilowatt hour (peak and off peak hours) and how much the data center is using in comparison to the entire building per month. Once the baseline is determined, you can track your changes by using PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) which was developed by The Green Grid. PUE is calculated by dividing the total utility load by the total IT equipment load. In this case, a lower number is better. Older data centers typically have a PUE of about 3 or 4, while new data centers can achieve a PUE of 1.5 or less. A data center's energy usage consists mostly of server and HVAC electrical consumption.
  2. Improve HVAC efficiencies and air flow management by considering containment products: hot/cold aisle containment, chimney cabinets, blanking plates for your cabinets and brushed grommets for the holes in the raised floor. By making some changes in the data center to improve on your air flow, most companies are able to increase the temperatures on the CRACs.
  3. Review all of your IT Assets in the Data Center: Servers are consuming a large portion of energy in the data center. Some servers might be running applications that are infrequently needed or simply no longer used. There are plenty of tools that allow a system administrator to tracker server utilization and this information can be a great addition to your baseline measurement toolkit. A decent server utilization percentage will significantly increase your data center efficiency. Fewer running servers will reduce electrical and HVAC costs and can free up existing server hardware. Server utilization can be increased by consolidating server functions and tasks onto fewer machines by taking advantage of server virtualization and also by using cloud computing services where demand is known to fluctuate. Any future purchases of IT assets, energy efficient products should be purchased.
